We believe that every project we design and build should be firstly functional, secondly practical and thirdly somewhat easy to build. Although some projects don’t always fully satisfy these criteria, in the case of the particular item, it ticks all the boxes and also happens to fall easy on the eye.
Construction could really not be simpler and the design lends itself to either dowel of loose tenon joinery, and even offers those who are comfortable with traditional mortise and tenons an opportunity to show off their skills during its construction. We think this piece would look especially good with wedged through tenons, a challenge we may take on one day. With all the components being of the same thickness, stock prep is somewhat simplified with only the top and base needing extra care to be shaped and to help we include templates for these in the plans. Shaping of these parts can be done in various ways, from using a template and a flush trim bit in a router to using a bandsaw with a sander to form the final shape (my preferred method, I have a doubtful relationship with my router table), you could even do it all by hand using chisels and rasps if you should so choose.
You may notice when studying the plans that we have tried to condense as much information into the pack without using too many words and this is the first plan set that has gotten this particular treatment, but just because we think it came out especially cool you may find it hard to follow and use, please reach out to us through the contact page on our website to let us know what you think, especially if you find any mistakes (I have now read through the plans about 20 times and my head hurts).
We hope you decide to build this project and look forward to seeing the results, especially those wedged through tenons!
